LEXINGTON, KY. (Dec. 16, 2024) – Lexington’s Recycle Center has reopened after being closed for the past week and a half while new equipment was installed.
The baler, which compacts similar materials into large blocks, was replaced. The previous baler was difficult to maintain due to its age. Many parts were obsolete. The fabric structure that serves as the roof for the tipping floor was also replaced. The tipping floor houses recyclables before they are sorted. The fabric structure protects the material from the weather.
You can help keep the Lexington Recycle Center running efficiently by only recycling the following items in blue recycle carts and recycling drop-off dumpsters:
- aluminum and steel cans, lids and canisters
- #1 and #2 plastic bottles, jars and jugs (caps optional)
- paper (not shredded)
- cartons (caps optional)
- glass bottles and jars
- cardboard
- paperboard
These are the only items that we currently recycle. Never put other metal or plastic items, medical waste, batteries or electronics in recycle carts or dumpsters. Do not use your recycle cart as a trash can. Recycling should not be bagged. Unwanted items pose a risk to employees and can damage equipment. Unwanted items can also contaminate the materials we do accept. All bagged material and other unwanted items are sent to the landfill.
Metal can be taken to Cohen Lexington or other scrap metal facilities. Plastic bag drop-off bins are available at many local grocery stores. Electronics can be taken to the City’s Electronic Recycling facility on Versailles Road. Hours and accepted items are available at https://lexingtonky.gov/living/waste-collection/electronics-recycling.
